Melanie’s Park Art and History Walking Tour via Downtown Tacoma

Who is leading the tour?
Claire Keller-Scholz, Planning and Asset Management Administrator, is the park district historian and oversees the 1% for Art program for Parks Tacoma.

What can attendees hope to learn, see or experience on your tour?
Join Claire on a walking tour through historic spaces in the urban core of downtown and experience the newest park in Tacoma, Melanie Jan LaPlant Dressel Park. This small park packs a big punch! Attendees will learn about the transformation of the park from a former polluted industrial site into a place for children and families, as well as how the rich layers of history have been expressed through public art along the waterfront and throughout downtown.

How many people can participate in the tour?
25 Maximum.

Distance of tour and any mobility constraints?
Approximately 2 miles round trip on city sidewalks and across two bridges. Participants should be prepared for some fair-moderate slopes and several sets of stairs. Mobility challenged participants are welcome to arrange their own transportation and meet at Melanie’s Park for the second half of the tour. There are a few ADA parking stalls and accessible pathways into the park.
